The Group of Seven (G7) summit opened on the morning of June 16 (local time) in Kananaskis, located in the western Canadian province of Alberta. Under the chairmanship of Canadian Prime Minister Carney, the first day of the summit focused primarily on the outlook for the global economy, with U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policy drawing significant attention and concern.

PM Carney: “There Can Be No Security Without Economic Prosperity”

At the opening of the summit, Prime Minister Carney stated,
“Countries are continuing to strengthen their military capabilities, but true security cannot be achieved without economic prosperity. While full agreement on every issue may be difficult, I hope we can work together where possible to build the next era of prosperity that will benefit people around the world.”
One of the central topics at this summit is the additional tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on steel and aluminum imports, which have heightened tensions with other G7 nations advocating for free and fair trade.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized in a press conference the day before the summit,
“Trade must remain fair, predictable, and open. We must avoid protectionism,” indirectly criticizing the unilateral trade measures taken by the United States.
Particular attention is being paid to the approaching deadline of July 9, when the temporary suspension of “reciprocal tariffs” by the Trump administration is set to expire. The outcome of the summit is expected to have significant implications for the global economy.

Diverging Views on Middle East Conflict

Tensions in the Middle East also emerged as a key topic. Amid ongoing military exchanges between Israel and Iran, the G7 countries are reportedly drafting a joint statement calling for de-escalation, according to Reuters on June 16.
The draft reportedly includes clauses emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability in global markets—including energy markets—and acknowledges Israel’s right to self-defense.
However, Reuters reports that President Trump has so far refused to sign the draft, highlighting divisions among the participating nations.
During a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Carney, President Trump told reporters,
“Iran is not winning this war. They need to talk. They should come to the table before it’s too late,”
underscoring the urgency of pursuing diplomatic solutions.
Later, White House Press Secretary Leavitt announced that President Trump would leave Canada on the night of June 16, cutting his attendance short to return to Washington due to the situation in the Middle East.
The G7 summit is scheduled to continue through June 17, with additional discussions expected on a wide range of global challenges, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, international security, and the preservation of the rules-based international order.
